14 May 2013 — World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on 14 June every year, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. With the slogan “Give the gift of life: donate blood”, this year’s campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, will focus on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.

92 million blood donations every year.

What is blood made up of?

An adult human has about 4–6 liters of blood circulating in the body. Among other things, blood transports oxygen to various parts of the body.

Blood consists of several types of cells floating around in a fluid called plasma.

The red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen. Red blood cells transport oxygen to, and remove carbon dioxide from, the body tissues.

The white blood cells fight infection.

The platelets help the blood to clot, if you get a wound for example.

The plasma contains salts and various kinds of proteins.

Blood transfusions – who can receive blood from whom?

Of course you can always give A blood to persons with blood group A, B blood to a person with blood group B and so on. But in some cases you can receive blood with another type of blood group, or donate blood to a person with another kind of blood group.

The transfusion will work if a person who is going to receive blood has a blood group that doesn’t have any antibodies against the donor blood’s antigens. But if a person who is going to receive blood has antibodies matching the donor blood’s antigens, the red blood cells in thedonated blood will clump.

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

A cardiologist says If everyone who sees this post shares it to 10 people, you can bet that we’ll save at least one life..

Rather than sharing jokes only please contribute by forwarding this info which can save a person’s life.

Most people are not aware of the fact that kidney diseases can be silent killers. They may not show any symptoms for a long time till the situation becomes critical. It is important to recognize the symptoms of kidney diseases to catch them early. Here is a list of twelve such symptoms you should look out for:

Changes in your urinary function : The first symptom of kidney disease is changes the amount, frequency of your urination. There may be an increase or decrease in amount and/or its frequency, especially at night. It may also look more dark colored You may feel the urge to urinate but are unable to do so when you get to the restroom.

Difficulty or pain during voiding : Sometimes you have difficulty or feel pressure or pain while voiding. Urinary tract infections may cause symptoms such as pain or burning during urination. When these infections spread to the kidneys they may cause fever and pain in your back.

Blood in the urine : This is a symptom of kidney disease which is a definite cause for concern. There may be other reasons, but it is advisable to visit your doctor in case you notice it.

Swelling : Kidneys remove wastes and extra fluid from the body. When they are unable to do so, this extra fluid will build up causing swelling in your hands, feet, ankles and/or your face.

Extreme fatigue and generalized weakness : Your kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin which helps make red blood cells that carry oxygen. In kidney disease lower levels of erythropoietin causes decreased red blood cells in your body resulting in anemia There is decreased oxygen delivery to cells causing generalized weakness and extreme fatigue.

Dizziness & Inability to concentrate : Anaemia associated with kidney disease also depletes your brain of oxygen which may cause dizziness, trouble with concentration, etc.

Feeling cold all the time : If you have kidney disease you may feel cold even when in a warm surrounding due to anaemia. Pyelonephritis (kidney infection) may cause fever with chills.

Skin rashes and itching : Kidney failure causes waste build-up in your blood. This can causes severe itching and skin rashes.

Ammonia breath and metallic taste : Kidney failure increases level of urea in the blood (uraemia). This urea is broken down to ammonia in the saliva causing urine-like bad breath called ammonia breath. It is also usually associated with an unpleasant metallic taste (dysgeusia) in the mouth.

Nausea and vomiting : The build-up of waste products in your blood in kidney disease can also cause nausea and vomiting

Shortness of breath : Kidney disease causes fluid to build up in the lungs. And also, anaemia, a common side-effect of kidney disease, starves your body of oxygen. You may have trouble catching your breath due to these factors.

Pain in the back or sides : Some cases of kidney disease may cause pain. You may feel a severe cramping pain that spreads from the lower back into the groin if there is a kidney stone in the ureter. Pain may also be related to polycystic kidney disease, an inherited kidney disorder, which causes many fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. Interstitial cystitis, a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall, causes chronic pain and discomfort.

It is important to identify kidney disease early because in most cases the damage in the kidneys can’t be undone. To reduce your chances of getting severe kidney problems, see your doctor when you observe one or more of the above symptoms. If caught early, kidney disease can be treated very effectively.

Hemophilia is a lifelong bleeding disorder where blood is prevented from clotting properly. In normal conditions, a particular protein in the blood controls bleeding by causing it to clot and people with hemophilia either do not have enough of this protein, or else it does not work properly.

Hemophilia affects approximately one person in 10,000, meaning that there are around 700,000 people in the world who have the condition.

The severity of a person’s bleeding disorder usually depends on the amount of clotting factor that is missing or not functioning and the most common bleeding disorder is known as von Willebrand disease. This is generally less severe than other bleeding disorders and many people with this condition are unaware that they have it because their bleeding symptoms are very mild.
But for a person with serious hemophilia, even a seemingly minor injury can result in uncontrolled internal bleeding. Bleeding into joints and muscles will cause severe pain and disability, while bleeding into major organs such as the brain, can result in death. Naturally this is a disease that will have serious implications on a person’s lifestyle.
In addition there are what are known as rare clotting factors, which are bleeding disorders in which one or more of the clotting agents is missing or not working properly. Less is known about these disorders because they are diagnosed so rarely and many of them have only been discovered within the last 40 years.

It was in 1963 that Frank Schnabel established the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). This is a global network of patient organizations that now has members in 122 countries. It is officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The first World Hemophilia Day was on 17th April 1989. 17th April was Frank Schnabel’s birthday and the day was chosen in his honor.
“One of the greatest benefits of participating in World Hemophilia Day”, says the current WFH president Alain Weill, “is the recognition that our community is more powerful when we work together. People from around the world will mark this day and raise awareness about the need to achieve treatment for all.”

The sad fact is that 75% of those suffering from hemophilia still receive very inadequate treatment, or in many cases, no treatment at all. Hemophilia can affect anyone, anywhere and although during the last 50 years improvements in treatment have been dramatic, the vast majority of people with bleeding disorders live in the developing world and have no access to proper care.
The WFH has made substantial progress in promoting sustainable treatment around the world. Experts have been trained in the field and they are able to diagnose the condition and manage patients. WFH has also been instrumental in advocating for an adequate supply of safe treatment products for all people with bleeding disorders.

Much work has also been done in the area of education, so that people who are suffering from hemophilia can learn how they can better manage their condition in order to live healthier, longer and more productive lives.
The WFH’s message is that it is important to reflect on where we have been and where we want to go, so that together we can close the gap that continues to exist between those who have the condition and those who don’t.
The aim is to lay a solid foundation upon which future care and support can develop. In that way the gap in care can be closed so that eventually effective treatment for all will become a reality.

The task is something of an uphill struggle and in addition to World Hemophilia Day helping sufferers to feel less isolated; it can also remind those who don’t have the condition that there is a continual need for support.

Home Remedies for Stomach Ache

To get relief from any type of stomach ache, you can drink lemon tea. Add some honey for taste.

For quick relief from stomach ache, make a mixture of 1 teaspoon of mint juice, 1 teaspoon of lime juice, some ginger juice and add black salt to it. Drink this mixture.

Take out the juice of a small piece of grind-ed ginger and apply locally on the bottom of your belly. This will give relief from stomach ache and is an effective natural remedy.

If the stomach ache is due to gas, acidity or indigestion, you can drink plain soda for immediate relief.

Take 50 ml of warm water and add two teaspoon of lime juice and one gram of black salt to it. Take this mixture three times a day for relief from stomach ache.

Taking some carom seeds and equal amount of black salt with warm water also provides relief from stomach ache.

Equal amounts of dry ginger, roasted cumin seeds, coriander, aforesaid black pepper, dry mint leaves, garlic and black salt can be taken and grind-ed together. Take one or half teaspoonful of this mixture with warm water. The quantity varies depending on the severity of the pain. This should be taken after meals and two to three times a day.

Women experience this type of pain during menstrual periods and giving local heat treatment helps relieve this pain.

Soak aniseed’s in water overnight and drink the water straining the seeds for relief from stomach ache.

Mixing one teaspoonful of ginger juice with one teaspoonful of castor oil gives relief from stomach ache and can be taken twice daily.

It is better to find the reason before you try any of these home remedies. Also, you should be prepared that home remedies can take time to help you get relief although there are some remedies for instant relief also. Once you know the reason, it will be easy for you to decide which one of the remedies will help you get rid of the pain. Try to make use of home remedies and give some time for it to show results.

Home remedies are best because they do not have any kind of side effect. Today, more and more people are switching towards natural curing methods because of various reasons. But if the pain persists and there is no relief, you should consult a doctor. This can be in the case of appendicitis because you may find yourself in serious problem if you neglect this. If the stomach ache is very severe and unbearable, it is always better to let the doctor examine and find out the cause and cure it.
